If you are going to do a virus scan I would suggest doing this in SAFE MODE, because that way only basic essential items required for running Windows will be run on startup, that way whatever malware/virus is resident in memory normally won't be run in safe mode.

going to do that, just sorting through all the documents on the computer and backing up what i need.

You've got some malware on the system, can try downloading the stuff thats regularly recommended, avast, ccleaner, spybot, adaware etc etc and see if it cleans it up but I always rather a format.

Thanks, will try that later

Anyone got any ideas on the other problems?

Yip modem could possibly be the issue, just swap or rule out everything you possibly can, if nothing inside your house is causing it then you can start chasing up BT.

Bonney

i'll give it a bash, also been told to try another modem. May end up changing phone and internet too as bt are shyte

Go back to basics to see if it's in your house.

One filter on the main point, plug in phone and router, unplug everything else and see if it still happens.

If it does swap the filter with another, then swap the phone etc etc.

the thing is, this only happened when BT put a line into a house a few doors down, thats when our problems started. None of our sockets in the house have been touched, and bt are denying the fault is at there end. They want over £150 just for them to come into our house and say there isnt a problem.

Shut up Andrew, you have no idea.

John

Somethings not wired right somewhere, take everything out and plug back in one at a time to see where the problem is.

Speaking from experience, not a keyboard warrior, which is what this website appears to be coming down to. I’ve had an experience of where there has been two extensions running from the master socket. One of the extensions did not have a phone connected or an ADSL modem/router. However, the connecton would drop every so often. There was not pattern to this either. Put a Microfilter on the end of the entension and this solved the issue. Removing the extension would have also resolved this issue but the company did not want to do this, obviously the paying customer is always going to be right in the end.

I'm not going to bother posting advice on this website anymore, and can get advice from serveral other websites freely available.

John, it's clear you haven't worked in IT and our just your average home user googling to make you look good.

Just plugged the sky and phoneline into a filter downstairs on the extention, and it came up on the computer with

Error 680: there was no dial tone

Then
Error 734: The ppp link protocol was terminated.

This only happens when the phone is been used. But the line on the phone is crackling. :boggle:

John

Has to be a filter on the sky box as well.

Bonney

Very basic. The internet is on an extention from the main line into the house. And the sky is on the downstairs main on an extention with a phone line attached.

What good does a low pass filter have on the end of an empty line?

Make sure there is a filter on every plugged in phone, try swapping them about and disconnecting things to see if one is maybe faulty.

Andrew

In theory, yes. Does depend how complex your line is though.

John

posted on 19th Feb 09 at 16:24

You only need them where a phone is connected, not everywhere a line goes.

Andrew

Sounds like you have a virus or some sort of spyware which is why it's running a little hot. If the CPU is getting hammered this will increase the heat and cause the PC to become slow.

The internet cutting off when the phone rings does sound like an issue with Microfilters. You need one on the end of each phone extension even if you don't have a phone plugged in - i.e you may have the router on one extension and a master wireless phone on the master socket.

Turn the computer on with the case open, do any of the fans turn?

Bonney

posted on 19th Feb 09 at 16:15

We went out and got new ones, then it wouldnt work with them plugged in. And now the sky has to be unplugged for the internet to work.

Gave it a good hoover out the other day, and its done nothing for it, even mooved the tower to some were more open.

Matt L

my internet does the same, i thought it was to do with the filters into the phone line etc but never bin bothered to change them or fix it. (i could be wrong though)

John

posted on 19th Feb 09 at 16:13

You've got some sort of virus/spyware/malware, i'd recommend backing data up then giving it a format.

Give it a hoover out.

Phone cutting the internet off will be microfilters not fitted or not fitted correctly.

Bonney

Haven't got a clue about them, only know how to turn it on and look on the internet.

Having a load of problems at the minute which are

Anyone got any ideas to any of these problems, before i end up throwing the thing at the wall
