quote: 2.2 has been unlocked, infact 2.2.1 has been unclocked aslong as you don't update the baseband to 02.30.03 - it's all on the front page of the iphone-dev blog :| edit - and yeah there is apparently a new iphone "around the corner", but details haven't been leaked, so it's rumours only at the moment. quote: If you are NEEDing it to be fully unlocked then you might have to avoid new phones. The new 2.2 firmwares have not been unlocked yet. I am guessing that by now the new phones are coming with at least 2.2 (doubt they are at 2.2.1). You might be lucky and get one with an old firmware on it but its a big risk to take or you will have to wait for the to crack the latest firmware.

If you don't want it on contract, then then best thing to do is either buy a 2nd had 3G from ebay (or new if you can find one cheap enough) or buy a PAYG iphone from O2 and then use an O2 Simplicity tarrif (O2 PAYG iphone + Simplcity is cheaper than a iphone contract) with the internet add-on.
