Try doing this: http://sniptools.com/vault/uninstall-and-remove-msn-messenger

The bit in the first paragraph about removing the registry entry - I had a thought about that last night! Hope it helps

To clarify, you mean MSN Messenger yeah? Was it Windows Live Messenger 8.5 or 9?

Right in Vista, go to start, then Connect To.

Mine shows MSN there... If yours does, I'd imagine its that. If not, I don't know I'm afraid!! :boggle:

What error message is it throwing up during reinstallation then?

If you go to Network Connections, is MSN listed at all? I can't remember if it does this in XP, in Vista it shows MSN as a connection. I'd imagine if its there, you'd want to delete that, reboot and try reinstallation.
