Why are you using an optical cable for the PS3 if you have an Onkyo amp that has HDMI in? Is it an old shit one?

thats what i thought, i have a 606 and from pictures on here thats what i though john had.

It's old now, I got it when it came out about a year ago, 505E, wouldn't call it shit.

I know what decodes what thanks, it's connected via optical because apart from the amp not accepting it via hdmi optical is the way I plugged it in.

Also, my onkyo amp has hdmi in, it doesn't decode sound via the hdmi though, there's much more to it than see if it's got hdmi.

That's because the PS3 does the decoding of the HD codecs.

I just have my Xbox 360 Elite, PS3 and Sky HD all plugged into my amp via HDMI. Sorted. :)

I have no idea why people don't spend £300 on a little Onkyo 606 -- it'd make their life so much easier.

Just seen you had posted the model number, that's exactly what you've to do.

Me or John?

sorry john, could be worth quickly popping to avforums.com and doing a search on your amp seeing as you have the model number, im sure others there would have been in the same boat as you

I've got a 505e, think it's old hat now, not sure if the new ones do audio over hdmi or not, excellent amp with my tannoy efx 5.1's, which will be 7.1 in the next couple of days I think.

Surround unit is the Sony DAV-DZ260

So, are we saying its not possible then?

ok maybe a weak point was abit harsh, but some players can decode hd audio to anologue which would of been a nice touch on the ps3 but im guessing this would of made the ps3 far too expensive.

It's not a weak point at all, no other blu-ray player will pass the uncompressed 7.1 etc over optical, you can still get some forms of 7.1 through the optical though.

His sony surround sound kit won't have hdmi audio in.

I'd say it's more a weak point of an amp and not the player, be it ps3 or anything else.

Also, my onkyo amp has hdmi in, it doesn't decode sound via the hdmi though, there's much more to it than see if it's got hdmi.

following my post about a week ago i have since found out that this is abit of a weak point on the ps3 unless you have an amp that has hdmi input, check to see if it does and just plug the hdmi cable from the ps3 straight to the amp

Depends what sony surroung it is, the old silver one in the house doesn't have optical in.

On my home cinema set up (37" Samsung LCD, Sony 5.1 Digital Surround, Sky+ and PS3) I have no idea how to get audio from my PS3 through my 5.1 system.

The 5.1 system has only HDMI audio out, apart from a 3.5mm jack input. As far as i'm awar, the PS3 has no 3.5mm jack out.

The HDMI from PS3 goes into the TV. My Sky+ has no HDMI at all.

Want to play BlueRay movies through 5.1 but can;t find out how :(
