Also, 5dr corsa, I dont really want to buy a new one if I can help it, I only paid £70 for the laptop, a battery is normally around the same price.....

Thats the problem Ian, it doesnt start at all after charge, as far as I know it doesnt even charge, like the cells are knackered. Ive just had a look at the battery John, its lithium-ion so NiCad doesnt play here....

If it's that ancient it uses nicad batteries you can shock them back into life.

It uses high voltage capacitors though and quite a bit of diy so you'll most likely not be interested.

You can try charging it full then running it down fully repeatedly a number of times. You need to completely flatten it each time so you can't just leave it in the computer - they power down before it gets too low. Light bulbs normally work well but you need something at the same voltage.

Ive bought an ancient laptop to use with OpCom/AbCom but the battery it has is shafted and wont keep charge.

So a)

Is there any tricks to getting the battery working again? (Freezer trick actually work?)

b) if not where is the best place to source a new/used one from?
