Its fitted, now I can use my PS3 as a media centre - around 270GB of useable storage for £50

What do you need a case for? It fits in the original case... :boggle:

I know it does, but I want to use the new drive to copy all my stuff from my MyBook over too, so I can reformat the MyBook into FAT32.

Thats why I need a case for it, as once the MyBook is in its new format I can back up the PS3 HD onto it.

With the case I can also use the original 40GB drive as an external too :)

Balls to that. Would I need to download and install of the system updates if I just took the old HD out? Or are they saved on the systems internal memory?

Best way to free up space is by deleting game data. MGS4 if 4.5gb for example!

You'd need to format your laptop HDD to FAT32 before you could do that...

Must be a FAT32 external drive, however.

Yea I found that out - my full external WD MyBook is formatted in NTSC, so I'll have to borrow my housemates external to back up the data.

Not true. The 12.5mm 2.5" drives won't fit. It has to be thinner than 9.5mm (I believe). But yeah, they're the common size so most 2.5" drives will fit... Best to double-check, though, eh?

As I said, though -- the 320gb WD 5,400rpm is the most commonly used drive. I'd go for that one if you're on a budget (under £50 at Play).

You've chosen the best drive... It won't void the warrenty.

I'm ordering the 320gb WD too, although the 500gb Samsung SpinPoint is tempting me.

You may want to go for the 7,200rpm drive over the 5,400rpm (standard) drive as it really does make a lot of difference in install speeds and boot-up. I imagine the PS3 will be going like the new 360 update (installing games to the HDD) so it'll be a lot more useful to have the 7,200rpm drive in the future. It runs at a slightly warmer temperature but nothing that will cause any problems.

Let me know if you have any other questions...

It even tells you how to do it in the PS3 manual and is approved by Sony :)

Yeah, essentially.

Like John said it's any 2.5 sata drive, doesn't void warranty and seems very easy to do

I'll be doing it soon as well i'd imagine :)

tom_simes

Does that mean I can get another one cheaper then John? Why does that one specifically say PS3 compatible, is it just to cunfuse people like me?

John

It doesn't void the warranty, any 2.5" sata drive will fit.

tom_simes

Anybody done this?

Western Digital Hard drive

I assume it'll void the warranty, I'm just checking as my PS3 is only the 40GB.
