Yeh but DDR3 is already available so you are already technically buying out of date stuff.

I'm in the same sort of situation as you James, I want to upgrade my RAM as it's not as good as I'd like but I have the same mobo as you (and cpu!) so it's not worth paying more for DDR when DDR2 is much cheaper and better, prolly gonna sling the mobo and cpu out and get a mobo that will take ddr2 - but then do I get a new gfx card, HDD etc etc
Knowing me I will want to

But then it's more future proofed than what I currently have so might be better in the long run.

Yeh that's not a bad idea.

I hate computers some times. I like to try and have the decent kit but new tech comes out so quickly.

Why dont you stay with XP, add another 1GB for £20 and see how you go?

edit - and then do as Cosmo says, new tech OR when the new tech comes out buy the best of the old tech which would be better than your current setup for even less :)

I'm running XP but I've got a copy of Vista.

I know XP won't use the full 4GB so I would put Vista on it.

It's not overly intensive, I would just like it to respond a bit quicker. Perhaps I am expecting too much.

Do you not think the difference between my current 1GB and the newly purchased 4GB would be worth it? £80 isn't a huge amount of money.....

I wouldnt bother for a while with either, if it can handle what you want keep the money for now and upgrade after the next gen tech comes out.

The spec of my PC is as follows:



Now I don't do much instensive stuff on there. The most intensive application I use is Visual Studio for software development.

My PC runs at an OK speed but I would like to improve this if possible.

I can get 4GB of RAM for the current system for £80 or I can upgrade the entire system for £400 ish.

I can afford both but I would rather not shell out the extra unless the difference is going to be hugely noticeable.

What do people think I should do?
