1&1 are cowboys. I let a domain expire, but they don't speak enough English there to understand that and tried taking me to court over the fee of about £5.

Now with me, I would say the opposite. If you're with two hosts you've twice the chance of it going down.

i usually buy thought 123reg..

if you having webspace too, buy that from a diff company, if something goes pear shaped with the hosting, you still got your domain ;)

Oh, and I bought my domains from http://www.easily.co.uk - was a buy one get one free offer I think :)

Can buy from anyone and host anywhere. If your not 100% sure what you're doing I'd recommend someone who can host and supply domain though.

does it matter where i buy it from? (ie do i have to host with them etc)

not really clued up on it all tbh.

what do i need to look for (if anything) as i will want it for a website and email (is this through hosting or domain?)

and wheres the best place to buy it from etc etc.
