TBH for the cost and the performance increase I'd say its not worth it.
If you were buying a new one with Vista, and you were considering 512mb ovr 1GB (or even 1GB over 2GB in some cases) I'd say get it upgraded, but otherwise I'd prob wait until something else goes wrong and you have to get a new one...as after 3yrs that wont be far off!!

Right my laptop is 3 years old now so I was looking at upgrading the ram, its not that slow or anything but cant hurt to make it faster can it.
Now currently I have 2 x 512 sticks so I would be looking at 2 x 1gb sticks.
Would I see a noticeable difference going from 1 to 2gb? Is it worth the expense?
