I'd get one with a modem built in.

Connect the router/modem to phoneline, then cable to pc and use either wireless or cable to ps3.

Anything http://www.ebuyer.com/search/?strSearch=&bolShowAll=true&intStoreID=8&intCatID=39&intSubcatUID=477&bolShowAll=true

will do the job

how would that connect,

Would i plug my current modem into the router via the modem lead, and then the router connects to my phone line. so it goes between the modem and phone line.

when i turn the router on my ps3 will pick it up , is this right

Yes but it would be much easier buying a wireless router and using that instead, even better if you want to add anything else to the network in future.

I only have a basic tower for online use, my modem that i use for it is a broadband modem but only has a socket on it for the phone wire.

Can i just buy another modem with a ethernet socket in to run my PS3 on, and just unplug my pc modem from the wall socket and plug my PS3 modem into it.
