Might have a large data recovery partition or something crazy. Right click My computer and go to manage, expand storage, then click disk management and take a look.

also some very old PC bios's only support upto 40 gb

i've bought a pc with an 80gb hdd

turn pc on and check the hdd capacity and its saying 39gb
