Alot of manufacturers dont use standard ports...... it may have a small convertor clipped to the back of it in some cases.

Only laptop hard drives can be powered off USB... all the others require a molex from an internal PSU or an adapter.

We have a shit load of these at work

You can get them much cheaper off ebay.

Seems a lot of messing about with the power as well - they either have a separate power supply which terminates in the 15 pin plug or you need to use the case power.

My IDE caddy takes power from USB.

All dell laptops use sata now but some don't use standard ports, not sure about other manufacturers.

You defo get them with both 2.5 and 3.5 ide.

They only have your usual sata though not sure about difference laptop sata standards.

There are adapters that fit sata and ide but only 3.5", not sure about 2.5, i'll have a look.

I have a 3.5" SATA drive here in a computer I'm fixing, need to get the data off so I'm guessing a USB caddy type device will do the job.

Already have a 2.5" IDE one which obviously doesn't suit. If I buy one is there a device which has all the standards - I'm thinking

2.5 IDE
3.5 IDE
2.5 SATA
3.5 SATA
