I used to run Server 2003 at home on a stand alone machine. Did it for about 3 years, only used it for storage and behaving like a router.

Have 1U Rackmount Blade at home running 24/7, aswell as a secondary server for storage with near 3TB of space...

Both machines are running Gentoo Linux... I no longer use Windows at home any more...

I've got 2003 Server installed on a virtual machine but just use it for testing work stuff and refreshing my memory on MCP stuff.

Unless you have lots of PC's kicking around your house I don't see the point.

good fun for testing stuff out without fucking around with production stuff at work :) I use to have a server farm in my room at the age of like 15

I had one when I was at home with my brother and linked up to the neighbour, was set up to learn from as well as to make sharing a little easier.

Pain in the ass tbh. Just meant when it went down because it was bodged hardware or power cut or whatever else the domain wasn't available so you couldn't log on.

Plus the RAID was a bodge and it crashed and lost data.

All together not worth doing unless you actually do it properly.

How do people find using active directory etc in the house with like 3 computers?
I've got a 'server' set up but all it does is CCTV and my downloading.

I think i'd get a bit pissed off if i had to login every time I wanted on the computer.

i think windows home server is on the brink of being released, i've not read anything about it mind so it might be worth having a gander before using server 2003

I have a couple of half decent machines. A Gaming machine, laptop, media center and two NAS devices.

Im considering wacking win2k3 on a spare machine and setting it up as a full proper server.

Im just wondering how many people are running a server at home, and what sort of setup is there?

(i.e just for backing up, the client files are stored on the server, the server is used for media storage, exchange is used. Are you running windows 2003, storage server, etc etc).
