Firewall = Zone alarm
Anti Virus = AVG

Been using that combo for a couple of years - no problems what so ever

Avast is much better than AVG, at work (computer technician) we found Avast to be better than sophos that we were paying ££££s for :(

Zonealarm firewall is free and AVG anti spyware (used to be ewido and it's excellent!). Keep them upto date and you shouldnt need anything esle really.

To complement AVG use the free Zone Alarm firewall.

Put it this way AVG, Zone Alarm, Windows Defender, Spybot and Adaware have been used and kept up to date on my system for years. I have never had a single serious virus/spyware issue with the above in place.
