Im sure there are easier ways to do it but what I would do is download Knoppix and boot that from the CD. From there you can explore the file system and make a copy of the password file. Then de-crypt the file with a program you can get online.

That way you could use the computer without wipping it. Might be some stuff on there that is interesting lol

i have a program you can use, put it on to a floppy disc boot off floppy and it will let you create and delete and change passwords

ctrl-alt-del twice at the logon screen will bring up a box to change the username to administrator if its windows xp using the fancy logon

If it's XP Home then the admin pass will probs be blank, so safe mode would work. I used to do this on my brothers laptop.

Anyone you know got an XP installation disc?

Just put one of those in, wipe the hard drive and re-install...all done off the disc easy peasy.

if it's a system password then you would probably need to call in a pro

Basically missus moved out of her flat a couple of weeks ago and found a laptop someone had left there at some point, asked around if its anyones but no one knows anything about it :boggle:

anyway thought may as well make use of it until/if the owner shows up!

the only problem is it has a main password to get onto it, obviously we dont know the password so is there anyway to get on without it?
