no worries, IMO home prem or Ultimate are the only real choices

personally i would recommend downloading it from a torrent site first and try using it for 30 days to see how you get on with it.
Its a big leap, depending on what version you go for.

Also, when you come to install it, if you dont install with a serial you get a 30 day grace period.

just done a little research my self.
wouldn't be too gutted about losing Aero, although it does look neat,
but i'd like media centre

Ultimate has Media center, media player, RD, Aero interface, schedules backups, data protection, windows DVD creator

Home Prem as the above with no remote desktop, drive protection, backup etc

Home Basic doesnt have media center or DVD creator, less games, no HD movie maker

can you elaborate a little on what these features are?

basic doesn thave Aero etc

Only two real choices are HomePrem or Ultimate if you want RDP, etc

I need to re format my pc, so thought it would be a wise time to upgrade to Vista, so that i can actually upgrade explorer, media player etc. (hooky XP atm, so can't update anything).

looking at a few resale sites, and there's loads of choices between the different packs, without too much explanation as to the variations.

obviously there's the basic, premium, and ultimate, but within each of those there seems to be more choices. can anyone explain them?

i don't think i'd need any of the features beyond the basic package, but i'm unsure why there are so many options.

cheers
