Has the mboard been replaced on the dell?

If it hasn't it will need to be eventually, although dell will cover it.

Also is there any warranty left on the dell?

Check at http://support.euro.dell.com with the service tag.

and for vista I would say the dell machine would need another 512mb RAM (at least), maybe a new GFX card, and ideally more hard drive space as vista takes up a fair chunk

EDIT: Not sure if you would need a DVD drive too (My copy of Vista came on DVD but that was downloaded from MSDN)

Where I work our servers are 8/9 years old and still run fine. They are being replaced atm but thats just because the spec is no where near what we need but in terms of wear and tear they are fine (These are RM machines not Dell tho)

Not a clue, our company have only just started rolling out winxp :o

Both specs sound around about the same just not sure what one to go for

Think the dell would be better tho :o The dell was checked and everything is fine all working 100%

What would it take to get vista running on that system?

Depending on how long it was used as a server it should be fine. Could give it a little service if you wanted though (change the cpu fan, as bearings may be wearing, re-seat the Heat sink with thermal paste and completely reformat the hard disk)

Shame, as that would have been a bargain

I think refurbished gx270's go for around 175-200 nowadays, so I'd say the dell isnt a bad buy :)
