Sorted it, turns out the DVD player set up wasn't on 5.1. So a few changes later and its working perfectly

Also noticed there is a Test Tone button on the remote, will try that first.

and in these surround systems, sometimes you can increase te volume of the individual speakers and run a test to see if all the speakers are properly connected and working

Yeah had the unit itself on 5.1, the fronts and center were crystal, just no rear sound or sub sound.

Good idea with the reverse thingy

normally sony has the mode select for the sound on the remote itself. mine has it

oh, btw try connecting the rears to the front connection in the amp and see if they are working

cables do make a big difference.

I had the same problem last week with my home cinema and projector. the scart-s-video was only directional

image wasn't displaying properly. got a proper one now :)

are you sure you used the correct decoding mode? not stereo?

I just put the cable that came with it back on and moved the sub closer to the amp.

Iirc it was just the sub that didn't work.
Could be your problem I suppose.

Must be very sensitive.

What was the solution? Its a JVC cable if that helps.

Right, basically my parents have a 5.1 Sony amp reciever but its never been used to its potential as only the 2ch DVD connections were used. So i've bought a Phono 5.1 audio cable to connect the 5 speakers and 1 sub from the amp to the dvd player. Whacked a DVD on but only the front 3 speakers were working. The cables are connected correctly, rear L to rear L, rear R to rear R...... etc. But the rears aren't giving out any sound, nor is the sub. Can't see why, because the sub is connected to the amp and gives out sound when I switch the mode to 2 channel.

Any ideas why it isnt giving out sound from all 6 speakers when in 5.1 channel mode?
