The truth is in the wording of the question...

- If you want to reduce the original value, A1, TO 42.5% of the starting-value, then:

=A1/100*42.5

- If you want to reduce the original value BY 42.5% of the starting-value, then:

=A1-(A1/100*42.5)

------------------

With a starting-value of 200, the top version gives 85; the bottom version gives 115.

yes, but i want to reduce the figure by 42.5%, not reduce it to 42.4%

=D7/100*42.5

85 is correct.

0.5 is 50%

i have £200 in there, which i want to reduce by 42.5%

i have A1*0.425 and i get £85! that aint right.
but if i do A1*.5 i get £100 which is correct :boggle:

im trying to deduct a cell by 45%

what i have done is:
=(a1 - 0.45)

and it doesnt seem to do the trick, ive also tried: -(a1 - 45%)

any have any suggestions?
