yeah, just connect the speakers to the hifi as normal and run the mp3 player into the hifi using 3.5mm headphone out to stereo phono

get a headphone/audio in jack (i don't know what they are called) then connect it to your mp3 player and it goes into your audio in of your stereo....

Whats the wattage and impedance? You could just cut the cables and physically join the positive and negatives of each speaker and see if it works...

but surely my mp3 player has amplification in it? shitty pc speakers work ok on it! can these speakers not be made to work at all then?

the spring loaded things on a hi fi are the high voltage outs which need amplification to run, if you just connected them to the mp3 player it probably wont work properly. You need to get some speakers designed for it which come with the 3.5mm headphone jack.
