Originally posted by Reedy Well actually if you were after a skt 940 board you wouldnt be an average home user. Also on all of the AM2 boards it has socket 940 stamped on the socket which could relate to this. Calling the sockets AM2 940 wont confuse people as its basically meaning its the AM2 processor which has 940 pins - quite simple really. As for the extra pin, all AM2 processors are the same as a skt 939 but with the extra pin ( performance, etc ) the only difference is that DDR 2 runs at a faster speed so you get a better memory bandwidth. You maybe right, maybe the extra isnt for DDR 2 but then again the only difference between the two processors is that one supports ddr2 and one doesnt so i would come to the conclusion that its basically there for ddr 2 support.
People think that DDR2 is the only difference, but it isnt. The memory controller changed yes, but so did the transitor count, power usage changed and AM2 processors gained virtualization so who knows what other changes AMD made to the core but havent said anything about. Either way, DDR2 isnt the only change between socket 939 and AM2 CPUs. As for socket AM2, looks like AM2 to me? http://enthusiast.hardocp.com/image.html?image=MTE0ODMzMTc5NUI4SGNMWTlXNUVfMV8xX2wuanBn
