The extra pin is for DDR2. The AM2 processors are the same as the 939 but just support ddr2 so there is a better bandwidth between the two
Its unlikely the extra single pin itself is just for DDR2, its more likely alot of the pin out for AM2 changed and the overall result was one extra pin, not just one extra pin being added to support DDR2. As for the number of pins, AM2 does have 940, but that doesnt mean its called Socket 940. There is already an official AMD socket called Socket 940, and it isnt Socket AM2. AM2 is called AM2 and not 940 for that same reason, so calling Socket AM2 Socket 940, or AM2 940 just adds confusion. If you walk into any computer retailer thats has the slightest clue of what they are doing and ask for a Socket 940 motherboard, you wont get one that supports AM2 CPUs. Its by far easier to just called Socket AM2 by its official name, Socket AM2.
Well actually if you were after a skt 940 board you wouldnt be an average home user. Also on all of the AM2 boards it has socket 940 stamped on the socket which could relate to this. Calling the sockets AM2 940 wont confuse people as its basically meaning its the AM2 processor which has 940 pins - quite simple really. As for the extra pin, all AM2 processors are the same as a skt 939 but with the extra pin ( performance, etc ) the only difference is that DDR 2 runs at a faster speed so you get a better memory bandwidth. You maybe right, maybe the extra isnt for DDR 2 but then again the only difference between the two processors is that one supports ddr2 and one doesnt so i would come to the conclusion that its basically there for ddr 2 support.
