If your laptop has bluetooth get a bluetooth one as no wires or anything.
You might be able to get usb ones.

Got Microsoft Autoroute on my Toshiba laptop and I have seen in options it mentions "configuring gps reciever"

Just wondering if this is possible and what should I be looking for exactly?
