i bought a 28 inch samsung digital widescreen tv for about 300 quid & apart from the actual width of the thing (compared to a plasma/LCD) i think its the bollox, no complaints what so ever.

I'm looking at either a Samsung Plasma or Panasonic LCD

Give it 2/3 years and there will not be many plasmas on the market. Once LCDs can be made the same size as a plasma they will quite quickly dissapear off the market

At the moment if you want 40 inch and have the money you could get an LCD if you want 42"+ then you will have to go for plasma unless you want to shell out shit loads

you are correct, sony crts are top notch, the muts nuts etc monitor tubes are also pretty good, but their plasmas and LCDs are really really poor and the price is just a piss take for them :|

as for crts being better, they will always be better - but technology is catching up fast, and if you compare a top of the line pioneer with a top range crt (sony etc) the picture quality will be very similar, and id be suprised if you notice the difference (apart from anti-aliasing stuff, but even then it would be small on a pioneer) :thumbs:

Thats fine, but in my experience, with the rents etc, the majority of people wouldn't appreciate spending 3k instead of 500 quid.
There are vast differences but I think people should have a price range and buy the best they can get for that price.

also, when you go testing these screens - make sure they have the dvd directly connected (best connection possible or the connection your going to use) and no other screen connected to it, and take an ani dvd like ice age etc as it will show up all of the anti-aliasing problems the screen may suffer from.
Also starwars is a good film to test colours with, especially making sure blacks are black, whites white etc :thumbs:

also get as high of a resolution screen as you can afford, as the picture will tend to be better, oh and dont believe that sony are the muts nuts with any of the new tech screens - because there not, sony lcds/plasmas are a real let down for the cash :(

Also dont get an external tuner box that loads of these shops try and sell you - ie: a re-scaler, it will distort the image a lot and as a lot of them work with pumping it out over a VGA connection, will suffer a lot in picture quality - make sure all of the connections are on the screen itself :thumbs:

I have the Phillips LCD with ambient lights etc in a 32'' although they do a 37 iirc - excellent screen very pleased with it but it is expensive. I always have a Phillips 23'' LCD for the bedroom which is again brilliant. Plasmas are good too though, the image burn mith is very very rare! agree picture is more realistic (lcd is very sharp and almost computer like)

Must be hdtv ready too :) as said above don't skimp on price or on cables..

Plasma and LCD are still crap compared to a good CRT TV.
Wait a year or so more until the mainstream names have got better picture quality like the high-end stuff.

plasmas have a better image tbh, also offer better colours than lcds, though you need to spend a fair wack on a decent one - like 2.5-3k.
look at panasonics new range, brillaint picture :thumbs: Or if you have the cash, pioneer screens, there about the best you can get - but the price tags highlight that.

lcds are alright, but for a decent 42" you'll be lucky to get anything under 3-4k. But try a sharp

as for burning, yes this is true, but lcd can suffer from something similar i believe (although not as bad if memory serves me right).
Also theres no such thing as re-gasings, once a plasma goes it goes, but it will easily last you 7/10yrs plus (normal viewing figures etc) :) Only thing a plasma will do, will fade after a year or so, but only to a certain % then will stay like that until it goes.

another note, look at what connects are on offer - some screens require aftermarket boards. Also, use the best connections your equipment offer - ie: if you have composite or s-video, use s-video etc. If you have DVI, HDMI, use HDMI etc.

Speaking of HDMI, it might be worth getting a screen offering this as HDTV is only around the corner and you can get cheap HDMI dvd players already :thumbs:

edit - dont skimp on price, as you will loose out in the long run, and same goes for cables, spend as much as possible on though - no point in having pukka equipment and bodging it with some 2 quid cables :rolleyes:
Oh and do a search, as there was a huge post about plasmas a little while ago :)

LCD. Plasmas are poo and images burn into the screen.

Buying a new TV (42") and dont know which would be best to go for Plasma or LCD.

The LCD seems a much sharper picture, but maybe to sharp for watching TV all night. The plasma i'm looking at doesnt need re-gasing, and has a screen life of 65000 hours etc.

Any experts on here that can give me some advice
