xp machine, i tried connecting the internet connection to the 2k machine but it didn't work.
I think its because as Visibleman said I can only have 1 ip address. So I will have to go through my xp machine and share internet access.
But first I need to be able to see each machine.

is the internet connection connected to the xp machine or the 2k machine...?

while the above ip address should work id use 192.168.0.1 for the machine connected to the internet and use 192.168.0.2 for the other machine.

then open a DOS shell and ping them address to see if the 2 computers can see each other.

192.168.0.1 ips are usually used for routers and switch settings, hence why i didnt go for them.
However, since ive never worked with a a standard switch before, i dunno whats happening.

Plus im curious to know why the XP machine is getting his broadband connection first and not the 2k machine. Plus what we both have said will knock the BB connection off, as the XP system isnt looking for the ip address from the cable modem.

So i have a feeling that he will need to go into the cable modem setup (192.168.100.1 if its the silver abit modems) and set the subnet mask to that of the pcs...maybe.

Like i said, im not 100% sure on all of this....all i know is that a router would be easier

as for the internet, well you have a switch and as i doubt you have two ip addresses for your internet connection, then you will have to set one computer up as an "on all time net server" :(

Obviously, its easier to get a router, but if you happy with leaving one pc on all the time, then its cool

im not 100% sure if this will work, but i know its possible. Well you say you XP machine gets the internet fine, so go >> HERE << and download the proxy server and install this on your XP system.

Then run it and a little icon will appear in the system tray. Right mouse click, select Configure.

In the "Proxy Binding" box, type in the IP address of that system (from my previous post, eg: 10.10.10.1), then deslect every option bar HTTP (so HTTP should only be on). Then press ok and the icon should go green (if it was red before) :)

then on your second system (the win2k system), go into IE options, select the connections tab, then Lan Settings, click the "proxy server" and in the ip box enter the ip adress of the win XP server (eg 10.10.10.1) and in the port box enter 6588. Ok everythinh, restart the xp machine and load the proxy program, then reboot the 2k system and hopefully it should all work :)

like i say, not 100% sure, but i know it can be done like this

Nope I have automatically detect settings. Do you think this is where i'm going wrong?

set one machines ip to 10.10.10.1 and the other to 10.10.10.2. Set both subnet masks to 255.255.255.0.

reboot both machines and then on the .1 machine, go to my computer and type \\10.10.10.2 you should be asked to enter a username and password (usually administrator for the username etc) :)

that should work and the reason behind this is because none of the machines have a DHCP server, so none of them are giving out ip address etc :)

have you tried rebooting any of them so they can detect each other?

I used my laptop to connect to the works LAN but the only way I got it to work is by installing NetBuei, but it makes it so slow.

Could be anything, it's a mystery card, hence the "unknown" :P

can't really do that coz it doesn't have enough memory (its laptop) only has 128 mb ram.
It maybe the network card in the laptop thats faulty. I would download the latest drivers as well but I don't know what network card it is.

Right I have 2 pcs at my flat which I want to connect to a network so I can share files and both go on the internet at the same time.

I have 1 win xp machine and 1 win 2k machine I also have a 8 port switch and a network card in each machine with Cat5 cable.

I have connected both machines to the switch and my NTL broadband,
the internet works off my XP machine but not the 2k machine.

I also cannot see either machine on the network.

Anyone have an idea what i'm doing wrong?
