Get hold of a program called Partition Magic... This will allow you to split your hard drive into 2 different virtual drives - one for re-installing an operating system, other for backing-up documents. Just be-careful when/if in Windows's setup over which partition you format, wrong choice and all is lost. Make a note of each drive letter C/D/E etc... Just remember where you've backed everything up on to quote: That route is your best bet. Get a cheap hard drive, take your current one out, install your choice of operating system on the new drive, computer up and running then get the other hard drive in with your files on.

If the hard drive is over 18 months old I'd personally invest in a new drive, do a completely fresh install on that and then when thats up and running throw your old drive back in and copy what you want to keep back across.
