You can unlock the Motorola 3G phones - I had a Motorola A830 which I had unlocked, uses the same codes as the standard moto phones.

All the 3G dual mode UMTS/GSM phones have to be compatible with 2G (3 volt) & 3G SIMs.

can only unlock the older motorola fones

can unlock the 7600 3G fone to work on all networks but this nokia is not a TRUE 3G fone

3G is a different voltage chip/sim

You can unlock the Nokia and Motorola 3G phones. Not the NEC ones and I don't think you can unlock the LG one either.

If you try and use an unlocked 3G phone with an Orange/Vodafone/O2/T-Mobile 2G SIM in an area which has that network's 3G network in test, then you will get invalid carrier/sim card registration failed or similar message - because the SIM will try and register to the network but then get chucked off (because the test 3G networks are closed to normal subscribers).

Unless the phone has an option on it to lock it to 2G only (which the Nokia 7600 has, but I think the option is disabled by Three on phones distributed by them - for subsidy protection).

3g phones will only work on a 3g-enabled network. My brother has a demonstration phone from his work, which is unlocked to networks, but when a sim card from say a regular GSM phone is put in, it just displays invalid carrier. The 3G cards from 3 and VodaFone so far work fine in the phone though.

Just unlock the phone completely so it works any network
