How do they work that out?

BT guarantee 512k minimum to 99.9% of homes and there is no theoretical distance limit anymore. It won't be no more expensive than any other service.............. it simply doesn't work like that if he already has a phone line. Doesn't cost a service provider any more money if the distance of the line is longer.

If you are 6km or less from the exchange you can get 1/2mb depending on the quality of the cable run whether it's all copper or an alloy.

I've got someone in Usk who's bloody far away from the exchange and we've got 512k working at their farm.

all well and good, but if hes out in the sticks and has a shocking phone line, is he likely to have decent mobile phone reception? if he has then fair enough

That sounds much better than what he has. Thanks :)

You can get Pay & Go type mobile broadband too, here's O2's offering for example:

http://shop.o2.co.uk/promo/o2mobilebroadband/tab/Pay_and_Go

You just pay for the USB modem and you can pay for broadband use by day/week/month.

How much is that likely to be?

He's just on a BT pay as you go type thing at the moment so doesn't cost him much at all.

On a side note, surely your uncle could get mobile broadband?

I thought about it but wasn't sure about the updates? Will they not take forever to download on 56k?
