I've got windows 7 and my internet has been dropping over last few days, this morning I couldn't get it to work at all. I phoned up Virgin who told me to restart modem etc which I had obviously done.

It does poll MS's servers

Or just hide the icon and find out the internet is down when sites don't load.

As pow said, i don't think there is a solution as it's caused when it times out checking the DNS (i've also heard it checks with MS's own servers to determine an internet connection).

In the TCP/IP settings it's set to automatically obtain the IP and DNS addresses, would it be better to manually set this?

it's because vista/win7 checks the DNS to determine whether it's connected to the internet. I have it happening here on win7 every so often - pops up to say that there is not internet connection (although still an ethernet connection), yet the net works fine.

Also the connection is ethernet so I can't even blame wireless!

Well the router is literally next to my monitor and the DSL and 'Internet' LEDs are always green.

Every so often the little network/Internet connection icon in the system tray will go from showing the normal two computers and globe icon (i.e. local and Internet connection) to just two computers only icon (local only connection) yet my Internet connection still works fine. |
