They're all essentially the same, all have a usb/sata chip inside and all have a hard drive, all of which have failure rates.

As PaulW said, cache won't make a difference over USB.

Unless you find something at Makro, the link I provided should be the cheapest :thumbs:

I got one from comet, was a verbitasim or something like that it was £75, had it for a wee while now, works great

Cheers Paul. I have no idea what that other one is!

My mate has a Makro card so I might go there with him and see what's there.

If you're transfering via USB and not eSata, then regardless if it has 16MB or 32MB cache, it will make *no* difference to the speed of the drive...

I got myself a Western Digital 1TB MyBook... very good drive :) Filled it inside a week...

one is 32MB Cache and the other is 16MB.

What is that and why is it better?

Pretty much the same drive with different branding is also available here for a few quid cheaper;

£61.97 delivered.

My PC is the only one in the house.

That one looks good enough for me. Simple USB plug and play FTW!

Do you need NAS? (i.e. can pick the drive up from anything connected to your network) or just simple USB?

1TB for £64.99 here, not the best looking product but does the job;

Unless you're planning on using the backup features/software that come with some of the drives, there's no reason to choose them over a cheaper alternative. Besides, there's also free software that can do exactly the same job, plus more.

External son ;)

Where did you get them from James?

I have a WD MyBook Essential Edition (USB), and a MyBook World Edition (Network) and both of them are 1TB.
The USB drive is for storage for one of the desktops, and the Network one is for storage/backups of the other desktop and laptops.
Would recommend either, depending on what you're going to use it for.

There are so many of them about now I have no idea which one to choose.

The ones at £80 look the same as the ones at £300!

What do you recommend and what should I look out for?

I am wanting an External one.
