Have you (or can you borrow) another system with wireless on it? As it'd rule out if the laptop has a dodgy card.
It might be worth getting rid of all security (just test it with mac filtering only) as that wiill free up overheads.

Also use the speed check >Here< as it's on the NTL/Virgin network.

Check the connection speed you are getting over wireless, how far are you from the router/AP? Most WIFI AP's are stupidly low power and just a single wall can degrade the signal enough to drop the speed right down.

Edited the first post as I made a error.

Wired via router is 10mbs. So its the wireless element of teh router thats at fault.

Sorry peeps my error

I assume he means he's getting a 'real' 5mb through put not the NIC saying its a 5mb network.

It could be a config issue with the belkin, so i would say reset the thing and go from there. Or try and update the firmware.
But i'm confussed why he's only getting 5mbps wired as the wan is likely to be 10/100, likewise with the NIC ports.

When wired, is laptop stating that it's connected at 10 or 100 mbps?

edit - just seen you're updates. I'm guessing nothing looks odd in the configs of the router?
See if you can borrow someone elses, but you can pick up a linksys off ebay for 20 quid so it might be worth jacking the belkin in and get something else

He's getting 10mb wired to the modem though.. And Belkin are shit so all sources point to the router :(

I've got 10mb Virgin and I normally get around 9.5mb over wifi using bbmax speed test.

Currently it does sound like the router although it seems a little odd if you're only getting 5mbps wired, have you make/model of the router at all?

I'm guessing you have rebooted both the cable modem and router (boot the modem til you get stable lights and then boot the router)?

Sounds like the router is a bit shit :(

speed test only shows 5mbs.

Done the following test

Laptop - Wireless - Router - Modem = 5mbs

Laptop - Wired - Router - Modem = 10mbs

Laptop - Wired - Modem = 10mbs

Hence problem is with router its a belkin 802.11g router whats the problem :boggle:
