go to any of the decent sized custom built PC forums and they'll usually have an OC forum with plenty of tips and tutorials as sticky threads.

Yeh, obviously, but its not hard to do basic overclocking, thats all I was covering.

I used to do it quite heavily on my old XP2600 Mobile Chip, and the differences were massive as far as benchmarking software such as 3DMark were concerned.

The options are just bus speed and multiplier.

Wish I knew how to do it properly. I have the Asus software which came with my A8N MoBo, but it's a load of crap. To do it properly I guess I need to learn what all the stuff is in the BIOS.

lol, yout not going to notice much different using applications like word for example, more intensive stuff, like gaming, video editing, photoshop, will definatly show a positive result, especially if you have no bottle necks like slow / low free space hard drives, at least 2 gigs of ram and a graphics card which isnt bogged down.

if your sad and crunch (like me) oc'ing makes a huge difference

i overclocked m pc by half a gig, and noticed not difference, the only time you will really notice anything imo, is if you start running benchmark stuff

i have a 2.0ghz 146 opteron at 2.9ghz, and the extra gig (almost) really makes a difference

the q6600 quad core (g0 stepping) oc's like a monster, they run cool too, like mid 50's under full load at 3.0ghz. couple of them on water upto 3.6ghz. an extra 1.2ghz, nobody can say that that is unnoticable

quote: depends what your overclocking. With modern MoBos and especially the new Intels you can easily overclock a huge amount without much need for extra cooling other than just a new heatsink (something like an Artic Cooling Freezer Pro 7 @ £15 works well!).

overclocking os overrated imo, iv dabbled with it andnever really found it made much difference, then stuff gets too hot and things begin to crash, no doubt you could stop that with some fancy cooling but imo its not worth it

2.4 quad core running at 3ghz at the moment, disadvantages? Erm. providing you're doing it right there are none, you just have to be able to deal with the heat

is anyone over clocking thier CPU? Want to know how its done, and what the major disadvantages are? |
