Does it blue screen?

Do you have any spare memory you can test it with?

If it has 2 sticks of RAM remove 1 at a time and try to boot it up.

You need to get an xp cd to run a repair on the OS files.

Open the side of the case, and at your discresion find a way to get the dust out of there. Could be that its getting too hot and shutting itself down.

Could be a driver problem, have you had a powercut recently, could be hard drive failure, could be virus,

When you say it wont let you start in safe mode, what do you mean? You try and it does the same?

could be some corrupt OS files, try repairing it using the windows disc, if not, chuck the hard drive into another computer as a slave so it wont boot from it, get what files u want off then reinstall windows

and also, get at least another 512mb of ram :)
