Ah -- a short would definitely change the impedance

fixed it!, stupid surround speaker stands! there is a small nut on the speaker stand which was touching both of the connecters, working perfectly now

time to wake up the neighbours...

thanks guys

i'm running, tv, pc etc but it happens with everything, i'll check the wires and the impedance levels too

thanks

Depends whether it's input or output overload protection.

If you mean you're cranking the amplifier volume up (not changing the input volume as you *should* be using a line-level input), then it's just detecting that's it's reaching it's output current capacity and restricting volume to avoid damage.

This is more likely to happen if your speaker input impedance isn't matched to your amp.

Check the impendance on your speakers (should be written on the back) and check your amp is set to the same value -- most have a switch on the back near the speaker terminals.

Possibly crossed wires at the back? Have you checked them?

I got one of there 3 year guarantees with my NAD amp, as the last one I got kind of blew up after a year.

No 100% but it could be down to the input signal being too high. What is it that your running? Computer, DVD player etc?

i've got a pretty nifty JVC amp, which i got from richer sounds a while back, however recently its shows "overload" when i crank up the volume...

anyone got any ideas why this is happnin?
