Sounds like firewalls, disable teh firewalls or add them to the allowed lists.

all that happens when i try that is that i get an error saying i dont have permission to view the content of the computers within my workgroup

if your both using XP just use the Home Networking Wizard.

Its not automatically done though is it numpty!!

you need to a) share the hard drive! they id type the IP on the machine in the run command window think its //IP then should open a command prompt with passwords do that should have access to hard drive

Basically I have a wireless ADSL router that shares the internet connection between my Dads PC and my laptop, I was wondering if there is anyway I could set up a network so I could transfer some of the files from my Dads PC to my laptop over the router. Any help would be great
