It really depends on what the item is that's being imported, the declared value, and how much the shipping costs are.

If there is duty to be charged, in some cases the customs charges can actually work out to be MORE than the value of the goods!

It's worked out as:

Declared value of goods + shipping costs = total amount liable for any duty and/or VAT.

Have a look on http://www.hmce.gov.uk for more information.

still cant see how a 77 pound screen costs an extra 55 pounds to get it here (28 pound import, 27 p&p & vat?)

The number of calls I used to get at DHL from people... "I ordered such and such off some web site and now you're billing me for duty and VAT, I already paid the seller P&P charges, blah blah blah etc."

People always make the mistake of thinking that duty and VAT are part of shipping charges - THEY AREN'T!

Buyer is under an obligation IF the item is liable to customs

That's the problem with buying goods from sites like eBay, unless you know what you're buying specifically comes from the UK, you're going to have problems with customs charges and such like... :(

sam, reading thru readers feedback on ebay........

a LOT of unhappy people buying tvs they think are from the UK when infact they are comming from hong kong

80 quid for monitor, 20 p&p (both stated) and then 30 quid import tax on top

just going by what a lot of ppl have said

ill try and find you an example

Also, as I previously stated, any electronics goods do not attract import duty, only just import VAT (if the declared value is over £18.00).

If someone sends you a 'gift' from outside the EU, customs in the UK give you an 'allowance' on the value, of £36.00. If the declared value is over that, you will have to pay any duty and VAT on the shipment, depending on what it is. Any retailer worth their salt cannot send something to a customer as a 'gift' as this is illegal, and the company can end up in some serious shit.

As for the £28-£33 'on top of everything else', what do you mean by this? Is this just for P&P? Because the sender will rarely offer to pay the destination country's duties and taxes for the recipient (I know all this as I used to work for DHL and had people call up about this sort of thing all the time, in case you were wondering).

i think its import tax, which is different to VAT

IIRC if u class it as a present for some1, then its import tax free (or summit along the lines :S)

Well it's £80.00 (for example) + 17.5% VAT (£14.00) = £94.00 + any clearance fees charged by the courier company (you don't get charged any fees if the parcel is sent through the country's equivalent of Royal Mail).

Search for something decent off Ebay in this country :)

Ive bought a few Sony 21" CRT (the normal ones) monitors from a company trading partly on Ebay, and had no problems with them

ps WHen something goes wrong with it, uve gotta pay to send it back to them 1000s of miles away, and then wait 4 them 2 fix it, and wait for them to send it back again
