It really depends on what the item is that's being imported, the declared value, and how much the shipping costs are.

still cant see how a 77 pound screen costs an extra 55 pounds to get it here (28 pound import, 27 p&p & vat?)

The number of calls I used to get at DHL from people... "I ordered such and such off some web site and now you're billing me for duty and VAT, I already paid the seller P&P charges, blah blah blah etc."

That's the problem with buying goods from sites like eBay, unless you know what you're buying specifically comes from the UK, you're going to have problems with customs charges and such like... :(

Also, as I previously stated, any electronics goods do not attract import duty, only just import VAT (if the declared value is over £18.00).

If someone sends you a 'gift' from outside the EU, customs in the UK give you an 'allowance' on the value, of £36.00. If the declared value is over that, you will have to pay any duty and VAT on the shipment, depending on what it is. Any retailer worth their salt cannot send something to a customer as a 'gift' as this is illegal, and the company can end up in some serious shit.

quote: Well it's £80.00 (for example) + 17.5% VAT (£14.00) = £94.00 + any clearance fees charged by the courier company (you don't get charged any fees if the parcel is sent through the country's equivalent of Royal Mail).

Electronic goods are duty free, you only have to pay import VAT if the declared value is more than £18.00.
