yes because they are made into a drum which is a percusion instrument. they ride the beat. they do not play notes. it is not what I would consider music though. it is a beat

Turntables aren't musical instruments. As Vibrio says, only things that you can play notes on are classed as musical instruments.

I suppose you will be saying amplifiers and CD players are musical instruments next... dumbasses!

please read my point above. a musical instrument can play notes. DJ decks cannot play note therefore

A DJ takes a piano, smashes it into pieces and builds a guitar.

I think that individually turntables are not musical instruments as they play already recording music, but people who are into DJ'ing will know that if you can mix - and mix well - then you create a whole new tune or 'mix' when you fade two tracks together - it's not as creative, but it does take skill to do and when done well it sounds great to those who apprciate it - just look at how much money DJ's make! They must be doing something right - and theres not many world-class ones - so it must be hard (and I think it is a skill)

But what makes me think that they are a musical instrument is the Technics DMC Championships - if you have no idea what these are then you may not know both sides of the argument fully. In the championships, DJ's scratch mix loads of records at lightning fast speeds, using loops and samples to create totally original tunes - this technique uses the turntable and the mixers as musical instruments. The world-leaders at this - the people who win - sound absolutely amazing, and to watch - even if yuo don't particularly like the style of music they create -its still mesmerising to watch them do it so fast and flawlessly.

Thats my opinion anyway.
