Originally posted by Ben G I've seen engines come back with a piston through the side of the block after 200 miles, so mileage is mostly irrelevant to a point. Iirc it was 67 engines in brand new cars. Poor sods. [Edited on 24-10-2014 by Ben G]
You are confusing manufacturing defect, with the risk of a higher mile engine that has could suffer from wear and tear. Nobody says cars cannot do that sort of mileage, but there is a substantially higher risk of a 140k mile engine (and associated components) going wrong than a 20k example. It is why they are valued the way they are. This and people seem to overlook the rest of the car and components when talking about mileage as if the engine is the only thing to wear. This comes with age, as well as mileage too. That is applicable for cars used to little, for short journeys and cars used for long periods. Well maintained high milers are more likely to go wrong, or require costly repairs than lower mile cars of similar maintenance record.
