Definitely your release bearing, dont know what you've got but i got a clucth kit for my 1.7 D for £63 and as above you'd be mad not to do all of it while the box is out

TO confirm the clutch when depressed makes a screeching, squealing noise, and some times the pedal seems alot heavier when depressed, sometimes its fine

Does this sound like a release bearing? if there anything i can do to prolong the life of the bearing without replacing the clutch or is the bearing to far gone?

If you can get is seperately then yeh - but if the gearbox is already out then i dont see the point in not renewing the clutch

so replacing the bearing is still a gearbox out jobby?

I think my clutch release beraring is on the way out, is there anyway i can just replace this small part rather than the whole clutch, seems a bit overkill (and expensive) when the issue is only the bearing!
