all been done 3months ago

im probably not going to skim it as it hasnt gone properly its is just drinking a small amount of water and slight mayo, doesnt overheat or anything so surely head will be fine?, plus car has done 100k and will probaly blow up properly in another 20k or so lol

how vital is it so skim?

you were right with thinking around £200

£500 is quite expensive for a 1.4 16v engine

i personally would skim it, can get it skimed with out pressure tested for around £25, may aswell when your in there put in a new water pump, thermostat, cam belt, tensioner, head bolts and gasket, no point in doing it twice.

its a piece of piss on a 1.2 8v, could get it done in a afternoon if you have a local place to skim the head.

Garages and stuff will say skim it as if there is a problem due to them not skimming it, you or they wont be happy.

Get a Haynes, 8v belt shouldn't be too hard, just need to have the head skimmed and thats it, when fitted with a gasket set.

Timing is pretty easy just get a Haynes so you know the process to follow. First belt I properly done was on a 1.6 16v and that was pretty simple as well.

I did a headgasket on my mrs old 1.4 8v. Cost me around £125 iirc. That was with new water pump, head gasket, head bolts, head skim and cambelt kit. I later found a receipt in the history for £550 for a head gasket change from a garage but they had literally changed the gasket thats it, they even re-used the head bolts as they were copper greased when I removed them.

i was expecting around 200 as the cambelt kit doesn't need doing

1.2 8v if that matters
