Originally posted by CorsAsh CAUTION *jr style post but for Mazda stuff* Been reading up on the future of rotaries. Mazda have developed a new engine, the 16X which will be appearing in the RX-9. The 9, unlike the 8, will be a focused sports performer along the lines of the RX-7. Anyway, the engine: Narrower rotors, with changes to the trochoid housing, give a longer "stroke" and equivalent 3.2l capacity as opposed to the 2.6l of the current 13B series. Reshaped ports and rotors give increased torque throughout revs, giving about 200lb/ft. Smaller seals and spring assemblies to give more strength, means you're less likely to throw a tip. Aluminium side housings make the engine much lighter also, for illustration here's a guy with a hat holding an all-alu 13B: But, perhaps most interesting of all is the direct fuel injection which has been implemented on the new engine. Reduces in-engine temps, leads to better atomisation of the fuel mixture and can also be adapted to run on Hydrogen (admittedly with a power loss but it's still eco-friendly :)) So there, maybe not everything in the future will be a fuel cell powered, silent boremobile. Unlucky if you don't like rotary noise though. Only bad point is they're not looking at forced induction on these either :( [Edited on 12-03-2009 by CorsAsh]
