Flat battery and/or dead alternator...

dont think so coz the car just switched off while moving.

Takes more power than anything else to start the car, so if the battery was on it's last legs, either through it being old or the alternator being broken and not charging it, then starting your car would drain the last bit of life from the battery, and it'd die soon after.

if the alternator went, the battery wouldbt be being charged, so your radio/heaters/lights etc would drain it, and eventually it'd cut out, and then wouldnt restart.

When you turn the ignition on and try to start the engine, is it trying to crank or is it just dead?

... my bro was reversing and suddenly the engine cut out and didn't want to start again. (half tank of fuel)

any idea what it could be? there seems to be no supply to the fuel pump. Opel said it's either the fuel pump thats gone or the ECU. (on the phone).
thanks
