When mine went on the Nova, it was causing to much power to go to things, so when I accelerated the lights would get brighter and the dash lights would also get brighter.

im getting squeling noise on start up until choke cuts off also keep loosing power in the battery think the battery needs changing anyway but could the alternator be nakered cos noise comming from aux belt area but dont think due to dampness!! :boggle:

I hope you have nothing to do with Halfords alternators. I have had 3 on my 2.0... Hopefully this is the last one I will need.

Nope only quality Bosch products.

Mainly make VW's Porsches Mercs BMWs MINI DC VOLVO etc etc

another tell tale sign i had was when my fuel gauge (previously at full 40 miles earlier) was showing empty.. ok the Alternator wasnt fucked but it had popped the belt off (which was luckily sittin on top of the engine!!) which is as good as having a fucked alternator cos it's not charging the battery without the belt on

Mine went about 2 months ago on my astra. Driving down the M4, my alternator light on the dash started flickering on and off slowly. Then gradually it started flicking extremely fast, then it was permanently on.

After about 10 mins of it being permanently on, i lost my power steering, and every time i used my indicators my lights nearly went off and the car nearly stalled.

I managed to get to my girlfriends door in swindon by rolling down her road, once i got there the battery was fnarged

My mates alternator went pop 2 weeks ago.

On the journey to another mates house the HU was resetting itself constantly, they FULL beam on the headlights was a bright as sidelights, and the horn just didnt work.

Then it struggled to restart on the home journey, eventually just dying :)

Well, the proper way of testing it is with a multi meter.

When the car is turned on the volts on the battery should be at about 14 volts, if the battery is producing 12 or less volts then the alternator is dead.
