On a proper car (Skyline) filters do LOADS. im talking about a 30bhp increase. But they do need cold air. I will dig up a picture of what the rover turbo guys do in their engine bays to keep the heat away.

i got a pipercross viper on my C16XE, biggest bunch of wank ever, with the cold air feed attached it gives a HUGE flat spot from 3000rpm -4000rpm, so much so that if revvin between these in 5th the car wont pull through it, soon as i take it off, the flat spot dissapears. weird huh

Depends if you want a tailored fitment or a universal filter Paul.

Joff - how much would I be looking at for a sealed unit? Or would it be possible to adapt something to seal the piper-x I've already got?

The standard airbox will leave you feeling robbed of all your 109bhp, even with a performance panel filter and useless drill holes.
