i have just done this

its £105 regardless of whether you want to keep the plate on retention for a year or you intend to transfer it straight away. You need to send off the V5, a special form V981 or something and your MOT. After about a week you will recieve a new tax disc, and an updated MOT along with the green part of your V5 so you can sell it. I'm still waiting for my V5

I know you can loose your plate if you sell your car before you recieve the retention certificate back! get paid on wednesday, will go into DVLA office and get it transferred!

i done it with mine on the corsa...I even went INTO dvla office...said it takes upto 6 weeks for all paperwork work to be done..
I got my V5 back though about 3-4 weeks later...

u can sell without V5 but it's risky..the 2 of you have to be trustworthy....
i was going to but it was somebody i trusted and I would have the cash but end came just in time...

I know they change the plate their and then (usually) but when your putting it on retention, their have to check and reassign the original plate. and you carnt sell cars now a days without giving the buyer the V5 doc! I know I wouldn't accept a car without a V5 documnet! and even with one if the V5 doc had a different reg plate on it!

I just need to know so I can check when I can put my car up for sale!

how long does it take to securly put your private plate on retention before you sell your car i.e. V5 docs need changing and stuff and I know sometimes theirs a risk of loosing your private plate!

cheers
