You should also take a reconditioned gearbox into account.
Mine had done 130k so there was no-way I was letting that anywhere near the Corsa

While the gearbox is out and in pieces, fit a Quaife ATB.

I've just bought a 4x4 cally with a 2.0 16v red top, alloys and a dead transfer box for £250. Sounds like we're in the same price band

thats very cheap i would buy it, cost me just shy of £500 to have mine overhauled: new oil pump, bearings, rebore and new oversize pistons. the bottom ends gonna be like new as i've changed the water pump and timing belt tensioners aswell.
my engine ran ok in the cav the crank turned very easily (too easily :D) when the head was off and the bores looked ok. i thought it would just drop into the corsa, guess i was wrong but at least i know it will be right now :P.
check if it has a coscast head on aswell which would be an added bonus.

If it's really cheap then buy it regardless on the basis you can then give it a complete rebuild yourself.

turn the crankshaft if it turns youve got a pretty good chance of it starting.

get a mechanic to check it out, also make sure u get gearbox, loom and ecu included otherwise it could become a lot more expensive

As above just been offered a cheap 2.016v engine from a cally trouble is i don't know if it runs or not etc. so if i buy it its a bit of a gamble. Wot checks can i do to test the condition of the engine etc. apart from turning it over by hand and takin the head off and inspecting the bores all help is appreciated

Cheers
Chris
