The 109bhp C16XE was fitted to the earlier GSi. Later models and Sports got the 106bhp X16XE. The C16XE has a slightly better head as standard and responds a little better to bolt on mods like Mantzel's Powerbox and Velos's Torque Tube, but there's not a huge amount in it and it's hard to find a C16XE that hasn't either been thrashed or with big miles on it. A newer and fitter X16XE might be a better option. And once you've removed the EGR castings and flowed the head of the X16XE, there's really no difference in performance between the two. I've got an X16XE and it makes a healthy 215bhp and 146lb/ft of torque. People drone on about the bigger valve sizes in the C16XE, but in reality it makes little difference. Swindon Racing tune their X16XEs to a tidy 220bhp and that's WITHOUT using throttle bodies :!

The GSi's on an L and M plate have the 109BHP engine (C16XE), and the N plated (later ones) have the same engine as the Sport, being 106BHP (X16XE). Some M plated ones may have the Sport engine too, I may be wrong, but think i'm on the right track :).

gsi has 109bhp, sport has 105bhp i think. gsi is pre-ecotec and sport is ecotec
