the dash tells you it needs an inspection, but I don't think it tells you what type. I've still got 2 lights left so I can't be sure.
Personally I wouldn't want a Compact, but its personal choice. I prefer something with a bigger engine but even now I find the 2.5 ain't quick enough. 2.8 or M3 next please.

This is what BMW attend to on the three set service intervals:
Oil Service
Drain engine oil and replace oil filter and sump plug washer
Check P.A.S system for leaks
Check all ancillary drive belts for condition and correct tension
Check all connections and lines on braking system for leaks, damage and correct position
Check brake pads and discs
Complete tyre check
Check and adjust screen washer jets
Check fluid level and concentration of screen wash reservoir, including intensive
Check brake fluid level
Refill engine oil
Check coolant level and concentration
Check ALL exterior lights
Check condition, operation of seat belts
Check ALL instrument and control lighting and ALL other interior courtesy lighting
Inspection I
Drain engine oil and replace oil filter and sump plug washer
Check all transmission for leaks
Check P.A.S system for leaks, tightness and fluid level
Check all connections and lines on braking system for leaks, damage and correct positioning
Check fuel pipes, tank and connections for leaks, damage and position
Inspect underside of body for corrosion, underseal damage etc.
Check wheel cylinders and dust seals for leaks
Check brake disc/drum surface
Check handbrake lever travel, movement of handbrake cables and adjustment
Check shock absorbers for leaks
Complete tyre check
Inspect bodywork for corrosion, stone chips, damage or contamination
Check fluid level and concentration of screen wash reservoir
Refill engine oil
Lubricate door mechanism, hinges
Check coolant hoses for leaks
Check and adjust valve clearances
Renew spark plugs
Renew air intake filter
Check brake system connections including ABS for tightness and positioning
Check clutch hose connections for tightness and positioning
Check clutch fluid level
Check brake fluid
Check battery acid level & top up with distilled water if necessary
Check coolant level and record concentration
Check spare wheel condition and record on chart
Check idle speed except on vehicles with idle speed control
Check CO reading (except catalyst version)
Check ALL exterior lights
Check ALL instrument & control lighting and ALL other interior courtesy lighting
Check operation of heater/vent controls and blower
Check operation of sunroof, mirrors and convertible roof if applicable
Check condition, operation of seat belts
Check engine performance
Check clutch operation
Check steering operation
Check steering wheel alignment
Check foot brake operation
Check wheel balance
Check speedometer operation
Check distance and trip recorder operation
Check engine revolution counter operation
Check temperature gauge operation
Check fuel gauge operation
Check fuel consumption gauge operation
Check heater/air conditioning operation
Check on-board computer operation including head up display
Inspection II
Drain engine oil and replace oil filter and sump plug washer
Drain automatic transmission oil
Change manual transmission oil
Check P.A.S system for leaks
Check radiator bottom hose for leaks
Check steering box for leaks
Check all connections and lines on braking system for leaks
Check fuel pipes, tank and connections for leaks, damage and position
Check condition, position and mounting of exhaust system
Inspect underside of body for corrosion/underseal damage etc.
Remove brake pads/linings, clean and check for wear
Check handbrake lever travel, movement of handbrake cables and adjustment
Check on rear disc brake models, handbrake lining wear
Check shock absorbers for leaks
Complete tyre check
Inspect bodywork for corrosion, stone chips, damage or contamination
Check fluid level and concentration of screen washer reservoir
Refill engine oil
Refill automatic transmission oil
Remove spark plugs
Check and adjust valve clearances
Renew spark plugs
Lubricate door mechanism hinges
Check coolant hoses

Check P.A.S hose clips for tightness & P.A.S fluid level
Check clutch hose connections level, tightness and positioning

Its only a BMW, just routine servicing. Absolutly no need to take it to the stealers.

it depends on what you need
oil change
insp 1
insp 2
my place charges about 130 for oil change, 230 for insp 1 and not sure about insp 2 as i have never had one yet
thats a good indi, all included, on an e46 convertible

Ok cool, sorry im abit of a bmw virgin - Dad just said that it would be too expensive to service one if i got one - i just wanted to see if that was true.
So you reckon just take it to a independant place?

My mates place used to change £180 for a service (Royton BMW)
BMW oil is £30 per lt from the Main dealer

For any particular reason? If your set on going to BMW then you may aswell get some vaseline with the car too.

Sorry to post on here but saves me time signing up to BMW forums and i know some of you guys on here own or have owned a BMW.
Whats the price of servicing them? Anyone have an idea? The model is the 318 compact
