268's have been used on standard pistons.

tried to ring the lad for you leo but there was no answer.

basicly, this is what I would do:

remove belt

remove plugs to lessen compression

turn crank over by hand until the piston touches (very lightly) the valve. then move the cams to create clearance.

do this until piston 1 is 180 degrees from TDC

try moving the cams, they should rotate fully now easily. Make sure they are using plenty of lube on the cams, followers and bearings. if the cams will turn freely then you have narrowed down the problem to the valve hitting the piston.

also, is he doing them up in the correct order?

RobHayes

check these are clean etc

i had the same problems as you and it turned out to be that

L30 SCT

well i think he was just putting them in to check if it would turn. if it aint going to turn at that then it wont turn when there tightened even more. saying that he could be over tightening them by hand.

no torque wrenches involved?

L30 SCT

the boy thats tightening them with a air ratchet and tightening them a bit more by hand. the standard cams dont work either. but all parts move freely when the cams arent in.

have you checked the cam seats? the bits in the head that the cams sit on, mine were dirty and scratched, and this locked the cam up as when the top halves were fitted it tightened onto the camshaft rather than the head

pmsl, at just bolting it together and starting it!

just with a spanner.

AK

by hand?? so... not cranking it with a socket bar or anything?!?!

L30 SCT

posted on 30th Sep 06 at 14:14

no just by hand adam. the valves move when you push them down and else works fine. just when you put the cams on it seems to stick. the boy said he could put it all back together and try start it. he said there may not be enough force to turn it by hand

he said there would be a 50/50 chance of it either breaking or starting.

what do you think i should do

AK

posted on 30th Sep 06 at 14:11

thought about it afterwards... it wouldnt be if it went round in 'reverse'...

How are you testing this? Hand cranking.... with plugs in?

i got my mantzel, ported polished head, shrick cams, 4-1 manifold fitted today. will get pics up tomorrow. got a small problem. the inlet cam is sticking. it is shrick 268 cams running on standard timing marks. it runs backwards but not the way that the engine would run

anyone got any idea whats wrong?
